Stylish Oscar Speeches
3) Daniel
Day-Lewis, Best Actor, "There Will Be Blood," 2008
Oscars
The latter-day master thespian, known for submerging his entire self into his
roles, is known to have a somewhat tortured relationship to his profession and
art, but as he collected his second Best Actor Oscar (his first was for playing
severely disabled writer- artist Christy Brown in "My Left Foot") he seemed in a
positively playful mood, even kneeling to be symbolically "knighted" by
presenter "Queen" Helen Mirren before thanking the
Academy for "whacking me with the handsomest bludgeon in town." Moving from
strength to strength in the eloquence department, he credited the "mad,
beautiful head" of "Blood," writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, for the twisted
character of Daniel Plainview, a character not at all in evidence on that stage,
where Day-Lewis epitomized stylish graciousness and tact.
