The New Biographical Dictionary of Film

The New Biographical Dictionary of Film - By David Thomson

From the interview at Cinespect:

You have a still from “There Will Be Blood” as the book’s cover art on the jacket. Why this film? Do you see this as the most significant piece of cinema in recent years? Tell us about it.
The book has had a very slow developing history as far as the jacket is concerned. It began as a typographical jacket. The first time we went with an image, albeit cautiously, was on the fourth addition which was a black-and-white still from the Bogart picture “To Have or Have Not.” This time around the editor felt we could move into color. And we talked about what it may be. I think there was a general feeling that it would help the book, not hurt it, to have a picture newer than say “To Have and Have Not,” which represents the Golden Age. So let’s give it some indication that the book deals with contemporaries, not simply Old Hollywood. “There Will Be Blood” was a main contender for this. And the cover designer, the marvelous Carol Carson, came up with several images from the film for us to review. The one we chose I just love as it’s very striking. From there, Carol made the jacket. “There Will Be Blood” is a film I love; and I make some joke in the introduction that young people should be careful with how they choose their parents or teachers.

Filmdogs commentary - The Last of the Mohicans (DVD)
Daniel Day-Lewis stayed in character 24/7, which was hard on Michael Mann and others at times. Mann says he is one of the only actors he has ever worked with that showed such a level of commitment. During the production the two became life long friends

Blogger's Favorite kiss in a film

Cinemaromantico Blog:
Day 20: Favorite Kiss. Daniel Day Lewis. Madeleine Stowe. "Last Of The Mohicans." I know, I said I wouldn't use it, but the Center For Statistics in Duluth, Minnesota estimates there have been a total of 3,442,511 kisses since the inception of film and that 72 of these kisses are considered in the very top tier except 71 one of them are considered not reaching even an approximate 550 Emotional Kilometers of the Day Lewis/Stowe kiss in "Last of the Mohicans." So, as you can see, I had no choice.
